Save Money and help the planet while doing laundry

I am one of the 2 people on the planet who enjoy doing laundry. I love the smell and soft feeling of clothes when they come out of the dryer.

For years, I have used "free and gentle" liquid fabric softener because the chemicals in dryer sheets and in scented dryer sheets cause allergic reactions for a family members skin.

So for as long as I can remember, I have spent roughly $8.00 or more per month on fabric softener and each week had at least one big plastic jug to pollute a landfill. BTW, the math on that is $100 or more per year....

I do not remember if I saw this on Tik Tok or on Facebook, but when I saw this "hack", I shrugged and though, "Why not give it a try?" And it works! It works so well that I have been able to use scented fabric softener for over 4 months and my family member has not had one reaction.

This tip will take minimal prep work and if you have a sewing machine or a pair of pinking shears, should be absolutely free for you to start. Ready for the tip?

1. Go through your old t shirts (You know, the ones with holes, stains, etc) Pick the softest one you can bear to get rid of. Cut 6 by 6 inch squares of fabric out of this shirt. The shirt I used was an XL and I was able to make 7 double sided squares from one shirt. I sewed my squares together because my awesome family bought me a sewing machine a few years ago. You can simply sew around the edges of your squares or cut the edges with pinking shears to ensure the edges don't fray.

2. use an old leftover container from your cluttered cabinet. This container needs to have a lid....

3. Put your folded squares in the container. Mix 3 TBSP of fabric softener of your choice with 1 cup of water and pour over the fabric squares.

Congratulations! You have just made re-usable fabric softener sheets for your dryer. When putting a load of clothes into the dryer, grab one folded square, squeeze the excess liquid back into the container and throw the square in with your laundry.

This method will save you roughly $100 per year. I know it's not much, but in this economy every little bit helps. This also cuts down on what is going into the landfill. I have gone from 1 large plastic container per month to one small $1.25 container from the dollar tree in 3 months.

If you have stayed to read all of this, let me know if you try this hack. Give me your feedback on how it went for you and if you found this helpful or not. Thank you!
